Cranborne Audio has earned its reputation as one of the most innovative brands in pro audio, consistently delivering groundbreaking gear like the harmonic EQ of the Carnaby series. The Carnaby 500 introduced engineers to the power of harmonic saturation for boosting and cutting frequency content, and now the HE2 and HE2 Legacy Edition bring this concept to a stereo rackmount unit.
Building on the legacy of the Carnaby 500, the HE2 enhances the harmonic EQ experience by offering a versatile stereo rackmount solution. This evolution not only provides engineers with the same harmonic saturation capabilities as the 500 Series module, but also expands the functionality with a few additional controls in a dual-channel format.
Each channel on the Carnaby HE2 features three bands of harmonic EQ, complemented by a dedicated level control with 20dB of adjustment. The HI band covers frequencies from 5kHz to 25kHz, the MID band ranges from 200Hz to 6.2kHz, and the LO band spans from 20Hz to 420Hz. You can use the level control to adjust the amount of harmonic saturation: reduce it to keep a frequency range clean or increase it to drive harder for more saturation. Additionally, each band includes a dedicated IN button for engaging and disengaging processing.
When using the Carnaby HE2 in the studio, Cranborne Audio offers several modes of operation. Above the meter section in the middle of the unit, you can select between Dual Mono, Stereo, or Mid/Side modes. The HE2 excels particularly in Mid/Side processing, allowing you to apply harmonic EQ to the separate mid (center) and side (stereo width) components of your stereo signal without needing any additional hardware. The HE2 handles everything seamlessly on its own. There are also TRS Inserts pre and post M/S encoding so you can patch in other outboard gear before processing.
As if all these creative features weren’t enough, the HE2 also offers digital control. Cranborne Audio's Carnaby HE2 Control digital software allows you to manage every button and feature on the unit via USB or NET ports. This enables seamless EQ adjustments on the fly within your DAW and the convenient recall of presets at a later date.
In our new First Listen video, we're highlighting the impact the Cranborne Audio Carnaby HE2 can have on individual sources and mixes. Watch below to hear the Carnaby HE2 used on performances by Adrian Taylor (Bass/Production), Sheena Taylor (Vocals), Darius Mines (Keys), Brandon Holt (Drums), and Kevin Schuck (Guitar). This session was engineered and mixed by Addison Sauvan.
