Vintage King's AES Afterglow Celebrates By Recording Straight To Vinyl
After the doors closed at AES 2018 in New York City, Vintage King headed to Sear Sound to celebrate another successful pro audio convention. For this exclusive event, we were honored to be a part of the first-ever live quadraphonic direct-to-disk recording session in history. For the session, musician Emily Wells provided the sounds. She is an incredible multi-instrumentalist who is capable of creating extremely lush, beautiful and deep music all by herself. At the Afterglow event, she created a layered performance that featured vocals/vocoder, synths, violin and percussion. Continue reading →
  4. Vintage King Presents: Silent Knife

    Vintage King Presents: Silent Knife
It's Halloween time and at Vintage King we've been getting in the spirit by binging on our favorite horror movies, both new and old. Whether it be the lush beauty of Mandy, the stark realism of the latest Halloween or the bonkers nature of every Friday The 13th sequel, we got inspired to create something of our very own. In our new short, Silent Knife, we posit the question, "What happens when a serial slasher's knife goes quiet?" Not "quiet" as in the killer goes dormant, but "quiet" in the sense that things just aren't quite the way they used to be. There's just that little something missing. Continue reading →

  6. Vintage King Wants To Know Your Favorite Gear Of All Time

Vintage King Wants To Know Your Favorite Gear Of All Time
In the world of pro audio, we all know that there are a lot of opinions out there. Ask any group of engineers, "What's the best microphone for vocals?" You'll get a different answer from each one. "Favorite mastering compressor?" Same situation. "Best plug-in?" Forget about it. There is so much gear out there and that's what makes what we do so special. Since we're celebrating Vintage King's birthday this month with our 25th Anniversary Sale, we thought it was an appropriate time to ask our customers about some of their favorite pieces of gear. In the spirit of our 25th, we're asking anyone who wants to voice their opinion what are their top five pieces of gear from throughout recording history. Digital, analog, just about anything you can think of, we want to hear about it. Continue reading →

  9. The Synths And Drum Machines Behind Early Detroit Techno

The Synths And Drum Machines Behind Early Detroit Techno
Like all good things in life, techno music can be traced back to Parliament-Funkadelic. The story starts in the early 1980s with three high-school students from Belleville, Michigan; Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May. The trio, who would become known as the “Belleville Three,” would sit around for hours listening to electronic and funk music on a late-night radio show called "The Midnight Funk Association" on WGPR, hosted by underground DJ, The Electrifying Mojo. After hearing "Flashlight" by Parliament-Funkadelic, Atkins bought a Korg MS-10 synthesizer and started cutting tracks on his cassette player.  Continue reading →
  10. Hot Stuff: The History of Gershon Kingsley's "Popcorn"

Hot Stuff: The History of Gershon Kingsley's "Popcorn"
As one of the first hit songs to ever use a Moog synthesizer, "Popcorn" was both a sign of its times and a look far ahead into the future of music. Before soft synthesizers were ever a glimmer in an engineer's eye, electronic-music pioneers like "Popcorn" writer Gershon Kingsley were using big, bulky analog units with no presets to create musical magic. Kingsley, now 95-years-old, began playing the synthesizer in the 1960s, but that’s not where his love of music began. Kingsley had already earned a name for himself in the world of musical theatre, even earning a Tony Nomination in 1958 for his Conducting and Directing. Throughout his lengthy career, he’s arranged music for film and television, Broadway musicals, and many songs for Jewish religious ceremonies, but his most famous work is an instrumental synth-pop song inspired by a salty snack.
