Before creating the summing mixers, monitor controllers, and converters we know and love today, Dangerous Music got its start developing custom transfer consoles for world-class mastering facilities like Absolute Audio, Masterdisk, Hit Factory, and Sterling Sound.
Combining the colorful sound of vintage studio gear with modern analog circuitry, Dangerous’s groundbreaking designs introduced the recording community to a new level of fidelity previously reserved for mastering engineers.
Innovators from the start, the brand’s first products – the Dangerous Music 2-BUS summing mixer and MONITOR controller – were instrumental in the transition from analog consoles and tape machines to digital recording workflows.
For more than 20 years, Dangerous Music has been dedicated to solving the problems of hybrid studios and meeting the ever-changing needs of professional engineers, producers, and artists.
In that time, the brand’s products have been used on countless classic records, spanning nearly every genre of music. The secret? Combining mastering-grade analog circuitry with the colorful sound of vintage studio gear.
In this Buyer’s Guide, we’ll break down each of Dangerous Music’s current products to help you find the best solutions for your studio. But first, let’s talk about how this historic brand came to be.
Meanwhile, Chris Muth had been building his reputation as an equipment designer. He built out a mastering room at The Hit Factory, designed custom mastering gear for Sterling Sound, and, after working at MasterDisc studios, began producing his own mastering equipment.
After starting his company in 1995, Chris engineered a session at Dangerous Music Studios, where he began designing the legendary Dangerous 2-BUS, pioneering the concept of a dedicated analog summing amplifier for DAW mixers.
Initially, the 2-BUS was built to order for local engineers in New York. It quickly became so popular that Chris and the team started “Dangerous Music Inc.” and began selling the 2-BUS commercially in 2001.
Soon after, longtime Dangerous Music advocate and founder of Audio Alchemist Marek Stycos was officially tapped to head all sales and marketing initiatives worldwide. For over a decade, Marek worked to bring the brand’s products from the underground onto the main stage before becoming President of Dangerous Music in 2020.
During this time, Dangerous Music would release a series of highly influential products, including the MONITOR monitor controller and D-BOX controller/summing mixer. Later revisions of these products were designed from the ground up, including the 2-BUS+, D-BOX+, and 2-BUS-XT.
From the brand’s first summing mixers to the latest digital audio converters and every piece of outboard gear in between, all of Dangerous Music’s gear shares the same philosophy: transparent yet musical sound with versatile analog color options.

This updated version of the groundbreaking 2-BUS summing mixer features a redesigned analog summing circuit, delivering unparalleled imaging, punch, and headroom.
In addition to 16 channels of active summing, the 2-BUS+ features three innovative analog color circuits – HARMONICS, PARALIMIT, and XFORMER I – offering quick and easy access to odd and even-order harmonics. Not to mention FET-style limiting and the classic sound of Cinemag output transformers, all on true hard-wired bypasses.
The 2-BUS+ also offers a variety of flexible routing and patching options, allowing you to color the whole mix or individual tracks, apply parallel processing, and even connect your favorite outboard gear via a stereo insert.
Building on the success of the 2-BUS+, Dangerous Music’s 2-BUS-XT packs the identical summing technology into a streamlined 1U rack space. In addition, two new analog color circuits – X-FORMER III and COHERENCE – allow you to dial in the perfect amount of character and control on the mix bus or inputs 15-16.
The D-BOX+ combines an ultra-accurate monitor controller with two mastering-grade D to A stereo converters and eight channels of summing mixer pulled directly from the 2-BUS+.
D-BOX+ recreates the flexible routing features of a large format console with a built-in eight-channel summing mixer and monitor support for up to five input sources, including analog stereo inputs, and digital inputs via USB, S/PDIF, and Bluetooth. Three pairs of speaker outputs make it easy to check your mixes on multiple sets of monitors, while the two independent headphone amplifiers offer pure, powerful sound while tracking and mixing.
The MONITOR-ST is a versatile stereo monitor controller for tracking, mixing, and mastering.
Packed with all audiophile-grade components, the MONITOR-ST handles all of your input sources, speaker switching, cue, talkback, and headphone needs with crystal clarity.
With its stepped attenuator, five input sources, three speaker outputs, programmable I/O levels, dedicated subwoofer output, and expandability to 7.1.4 all easily accessible via the desktop remote control, it’s obvious why the MONITOR-ST has been an industry standard for over two decades.
Looking to upgrade to a surround sound or immersive mixing system? When paired with the MONITOR-ST, the MONITOR-SR Surround and ATMOS Expansion Unit lets you control multi-speaker playback systems, including 5.1, 7.1, and 10.2, plus Dolby Atmos systems up to 7.1.4.
Dangerous Music’s SOURCE is a compact monitor controller with both analog and digital inputs for desktop or mobile applications. Connect effortlessly via class-compliant USB (Mac) or AES/SPDIF cables for instant access to Dangerous's famous mastering-grade D to A conversion.
Two separate sections allow the producer and artist to monitor different or identical sources. A pair of headphone outputs with powerful amplifiers make it easy to hear the mix over the sound of the performance in the room, while the two sets of speaker outputs allow the producer to reference mixes on multiple sets of studio monitors.
A dedicated ⅛” input allows you to quickly connect phones and other consumer devices to listen to reference tracks. AES Thru and Line Out allow easy interfacing and expansion with all your audio devices. Plus, SOURCE runs off 12V power, making it easy to take with you on the road.
SOURCE can also be rack-mounted using the Dangerous Music SRK Rack Kit.
Designed to sweeten any source with broad, musical adjustments, the BAX EQ is the first professional, stand-alone EQ to use the famous Baxandall curves. Unlike most studio EQs, which introduce phase delay and other audible artifacts, the BAX EQ uses broad-Q shelving for a natural, open transparent sound. Simply put, the BAX will take whatever you give it and make it better.
Combining sophisticated filtering options with simple controls, the BAX EQ is perfect for adding powerful lows and brilliant highs to any track. The low shelf offers eight selectable frequencies from 74 Hz to 361 Hz, while the high shelf ranges from 1.6 kHz to 18 kHz.
Additionally, low- and high-pass filters cut out any unwanted frequencies with gentle curves extending from 12 Hz all the way up to 70 kHz. Plus, stepped controls make it easy to quickly recall settings.
Perfect for everything from subtle mix bus compression to pinning a vocal in place to hitting today's high RMS levels, the Dangerous Music COMPRESSOR delivers truly transparent sound, even with high levels of compression. For character and color, try overriding the safeties for snappy VCA ballistics on drums, bass and the mix bus.
Using dual RMS detectors, the COMPRESSOR delivers rock-solid imaging when processing stereo tracks. Each channel can also be used independently for processing mono tracks and can even be cascaded or used in serial for additional dynamic control.
The Smart Dynamics feature engages the COMPRESSOR’s “dual slope” detector circuits, allowing you to control fast transient peaks and average peaks individually while avoiding level drops. Auto Attack & Release settings take the guesswork out of dialing in your settings, while the onboard Bass Cut and Sibilance Boost filter and external side-chain options will musically sculpt your sound.
The LIAISON is a versatile signal router and switcher that lets you instantly recall complex analog signal patches using up to six stereo or 12 mono insert loops to leverage all of your outboard gear, all the time.
Two stereo buses allow you to route different analog gear chains simultaneously. For example, one for tracking and one for mixing – or chain them together like in a mastering environment. Flip positions between pairs of inputs to determine if the EQ sounds better in front of or behind the compressor.
Love cranking up your limiter to the breaking point? Use the parallel processing knob on Buss B to dial it back to reality levels without having to alter that perfect response you’ve managed to balance. Monitor pre- or post-insert loop on either bus for instant A/B comparisons and store your favorite combinations using four memory slots.
This powerful analog-to-digital converter combines Dangerous’s mastering-grade converter technology with several innovative and versatile features. At its core, the CONVERT-AD+ is fueled by Dangerous’s Jitter Elimination Technology and a robust analog section to “capture everything and sacrifice nothing.”
Switchable dual inputs allow you to flip between any two balanced line inputs with the press of a button, making it simple to compare mastering chains, check reference mixes, or use one for tracking and one for mixing.
Dangerous’s proprietary Clip Guard technology removes any clipping indicators from your digital prints with zero change in the audio quality, ensuring digital distribution platforms don’t flag your tracks for level issues while maintaining the character and color of clipping the converter. Zoomable meters allow you to hone in on the top 10 dB of dynamic activity to carefully monitor the precise level of your tracks.
The CONVERT-AD+ is equipped with two color circuits on a hard-wired bypass. The X-FORMER II button activates a pair of Hammond transformers, wired in series for tighter bass response. The EMPHASIS knob dials in a unique sonic flavor inspired by the COMPRESSOR and BAX EQ.
For the brand’s digital-to-analog converters, Dangerous spent two years perfecting the clocking technology to seamlessly embrace Chris Muth’s masterful analog designs.
The CONVERT-2 may be used as a stand-alone monitor controller or paired with the MONITOR-ST, where its inputs are controlled remotely to keep you in the sweet spot. Everything is instantly accessible with no hidden menus, including input calibration, automatic sample rate detection, and input switching.
Inputs include USB, AES, coaxial S/PDIF, ADAT, and Optical S/PDIF, making it simple to interface with all of your current equipment.
Ideal for mixing and mastering, the CONVERT-8 sports the identical clock and robust analog section from the CONVERT-2, but its multichannel format makes it the perfect complement to Dangerous Music’s award-winning summing mixers like the 2-BUS+, 2-BUS-XT, and D-BOX+.
Equipped with USB, AES/SPDIF, ADAT, and Optical SPDIF (TOSLINK) inputs, CONVERT-8 is capable of supporting a wide range of monitoring systems from standard stereo to 5.1 surround sound and even immersive Dolby Atmos sessions.
MASTER combines the transparent sound and versatile connectivity of Chris Muth’s custom mastering consoles into one compact, rack-mountable device. The perfect bridge between your DAC or tape machine and analog mastering gear, MASTER features three stereo inserts for connecting analog outboard gear.
Individual stepped controls for Left and Right inputs and Input Monitor Offset controls make it easy to dial in the optimal levels. Plus, the onboard Mid/Side processing and width controls allow you to perfectly “focus” the stereo image of your tracks or deploy your arsenal of outboard gear to fix problems lurking in the center or sides.
Dedicated monitor outputs, along with two stereo output patches for connecting to A/D converters, tape machines, patch bays, and more, offer enough connectivity to suit even the most complex mastering workflows.
Best of all, MASTER works seamlessly with the Dangerous LIAISON, offering up to six additional insert and parallel effects loops.
CUTTER is a variant of the Dangerous MASTER transfer console with outputs specially designed to feed a lathe, so all functionality is crafted in duplicate, thereby feeding the lathe “computer” and cutting head.
The original black box that started a revolution, this updated standalone version of the S&M matrix was designed to widen or narrow your stereo imaging, fix problems in the center or sides separately, or craft engaging recordings and mixes.
Juice up the overall top end then de-ess that vocal without destroying the shimmer on the sides. Take your drum sound from a stereo pair of overheads, where the snare is too loud and resolve it in seconds with a limiter on the Sum channel. Peel back the fat from the bass so it punches hard, without choking the guitars or synths. Widen or narrow your mix. Deploy it classically or experimentally as a potent creative tool.
