When you’re working in a large control room, you need studio monitors that can fill up the space. Nearfields that deliver pristine detail at arm’s length can start to sound thin and strained when you're pushing them across a room full of gear for the clients on the couch. That's where mid- and far-field monitors come in.
Designed for larger rooms and longer listening positions, these speakers typically feature three-way designs with dedicated low-, mid-, and high-frequency drivers. Whether they’re mounted on stands behind a console or soffit-mounted into the wall, these systems provide the extended frequency response, higher output, and expansive sweet spots needed for critical listening in large spaces.
In this guide, we’ll take a look at some of the best mid- and far-field studio monitors for large studios, highlighting models trusted by top engineers for mixing, mastering, and immersive production.
When it comes to mid- and far-field monitors that can handle the demands of a professional mixing environment, ATC is an industry leader. Known for precision engineering, ATC designs and manufactures many of its own drivers in-house, including the brand’s legendary soft-dome tweeters and “Super Linear” woofers, which deliver a level of clarity and detail that's hard to find anywhere else.
ATC’s largest three-way studio monitors, the SCM300s are equipped with dual "SL" 15" bass drivers, a "Super Dome" mid driver, and ATC's signature soft dome tweeter. Powered by a custom rack-mounted 850 W ATC amplifier, these speakers deliver an impressive max SPL up to 121 dB.
If you don’t need quite as much power, the SCM200s are a great choice. They use the same design as the SCM300s, just with smaller 12” woofers.
In the midfield category, the SCM150s are a slimmed-down version of the SCM300s with a single 15” bass driver. Even with a built-in 350 W amplifier, these speakers still fit into a compact footprint, making them ideal for midfield use.
For those who need a little extra “oomph,” the SCM110s feature the same dual-woofer configuration as the SCM300s, just with 9” drivers. Like the SCM150s, the SCM110s feature onboard 350 W amps.
The SCM110 is essentially a smaller version of the SCM200s, with a single 12” woofer instead of the dual-driver configuration of ATC’s farfield monitors.
The SCM50 is a smaller version of the SCM150 and SCM100, with a single 9” bass driver.
ATC’s SCM45 studio monitors break the brand’s vertical convention for a horizontal design that incorporates dual 6” cone bass drivers, a 1” ‘S-Spec’ tweeter, and a built-in 235 W three-way amplifier.
The SCM25A is a single-woofer version of the SCM45 that’s perfect for mid-sized studios.
Barefoot is well known for its popular Footprint series, but it all started with the MicroMain studio monitors, which introduced the brand’s innovative Dual-Force technology. Since then, Thomas Barefoot continued to improve on this design with new main monitors like the MiniMain12.
Active 3.5-way studio monitors with dual 10" woofers, dual 5” midrange drivers, and Barefoot’s signature 1" ring radiator tweeter.
The MicroMain26 is a 4-way studio monitor that builds on the original MicroMain27 design with an additional 2.5" aluminum cone midrange driver for added clarity.
Building on Barefoot’s original MicroMain design, the MiniMain12 uses seven state-of-the-art drivers to deliver an extremely wide dynamic range and ultra-fast transient response. It's equipped with two 12” aluminum cone subwoofers (arranged in Barefoot’s patented force-cancelling design), plus two 7” woofers, two 2.5” midrange drivers, and Barefoot’s patented 1” dual-ring radiator tweeter. Powered by a massive 1200 W amp, the MiniMain12s kick out a balanced frequency response from 20 Hz all the way up to 50 kHz.
Need even more low-end? Barefoot’s MasterStack12 combines a pair of MiniMain12 monitors with a set of subs featuring an additional midrange driver and two 12” woofers each. With 3,500 total watts of power, the MasterStack12 delivers world-class performance.
Genelec offers a wide range of mid- and far-field studio monitors designed to handle the demands of large-format studios. The 8300 Series is part of Genelec’s Smart Active Monitoring (SAM) lineup, pairing powerful amplification with onboard DSP and GLM software for precise room calibration. For larger installations, the 1200 Series delivers massive output and extended low-end.
Featuring a massive floor-standing design with multiple drivers, built-in adaptive subwoofers, and Genelec’s Smart Active Monitoring technology, the 8381A provides a self-contained, freestanding solution for professional monitoring in large studios.

The Genelec 1238APM is a powerful three-way studio monitor built for large control rooms. It combines a 15” woofer with a 5” midrange driver and a 1” metal dome tweeter, delivering a peak SPL of 121 dB with exceptional clarity across the entire frequency range. For custom installations, the RAM-L integrated amplifier module can be rack-mounted away from the enclosure, making it easier than ever to flush-mount the 1238A in professional studio environments.
The 1238DFM is a compact take on the 1238APM design, intended to be paired with a separate subwoofer. This tri-amplified monitor system features dual 8” woofers, a 5” midrange driver, and a 1” metal dome tweeter.
A scaled-down version of the 1238APM with a 12” woofer.
Built on the legacy of the iconic 1035, a monitor that defined the standard for large-format, wall-mounted mains in world-class studios, the 1235A brings that same heritage into the modern era with dual 15" woofers, a 5" midrange driver, and a 1" compression tweeter. Driven by the upgraded RAM-XL amplifier, the 1235A delivers a staggering peak SPL of 130 dB. It's also available as a retro-fittable upgrade kit for existing owners of the 1035A or B.
The KH 420 is Neumann’s biggest and most powerful studio monitor. It features a 10” woofer, 3” midrange driver, and 1” tweeter, powered by a 330 W amplifier that delivers clear, detailed sound with plenty of headroom. The KH 420 can be used freestanding or flush-mounted into a wall, giving studios flexibility when designing their monitoring setup.
The Neumann KH 310 is a three-way active monitor that sits right below the KH 420. But don't let that fool you, it still packs plenty of punch. It features an 8.5” long-throw woofer, a 3” midrange driver, and a 1” tweeter, all powered by a 300-watt tri-amplified system. Unlike the KH 420, which is built for larger spaces and can handle flush mounting, the 310 is a more compact midfield monitor that works well freestanding behind the console.
