Barefoot Sound Footprint03 Studio Monitors

Fresh off the NAMM showroom, Barefoot Sound’s next iteration of the beloved and best-selling Footprint line of studio monitors is here. The Footprint03 includes some of the best features from past versions, along with some key improvements, a more compact design, and an affordable price. In other words, it’s Barefoot Sound’s most refined and versatile speaker to date.

Right off the bat, you may notice that the Footprint03 looks a bit different from previous versions. The new ported speaker design is a departure from previous versions, but it offers extended low-end and clarity without sacrificing build quality. Plus, the Footprint Gray polyester coating and added weight work alongside three Class D amplifier modules to bring more output and SPL than the previous model, but with no added noise or internal vibrations.

Under the hood, Barefoot’s new SPOC (Spectrally Optimized Conversion) technology joins previous Footprint features like the cutting-edge DSP and ultra-flexible MEME technology. The result is higher resolution, near-zero latency, wider bandwidth, and a more optimized listening experience than ever before.

To see the Footprint03 in action, check out our Spec Check video with Kevin Schuck, recorded at the Vintage King Nashville Showroom. If you want a more detailed breakdown of the Footprint03, its many impressive specs, and years of engineering and imagination behind it, then read on!

A Brief History of Barefoot Sound and the Footprint Series

Barefoot Sound was founded by Thomas Barefoot in the mid-2000s. A lifelong tinkerer and engineer by trade, Thomas started the company as a side passion while working at Intel.

Today, the Footprint Series is the ultimate realization of Thomas’ original goal: to make top-quality, affordable, and space-friendly studio monitors that can handle any task or setup. The inaugural Footprint01 showcased several staples of Barefoot Sound’s key innovations and unique design approach, while the Footprint02 refined the monitor further with a more compact and affordable enclosure.

What were some of these “key innovations,” you ask? Well, here are just a few:

Exclusive Barefoot Features

  • Dual-Force Technology: The most visually striking aspect of the Footprint01 and Footprint02 are the two subwoofers on opposite sides of the enclosure. But this spec isn’t just for looks—both drivers are connected by the same motor and move in and out in opposite directions, canceling out low-end vibrations before they even begin.
  • Dual Ring Radiator Tweeter: This unique tweeter design widens the high-end dispersion for greater flexibility and a more forgiving “sweet spot” as the listener moves around.
  • Front Baffle Speaker Configuration: The tweeter is placed below midrange woofer for a more centered acoustic focus.
  • MEME Technology Voice Emulation: This software accurately recreates classic nearfield studio monitors at the flip of a switch.
  • Barefoot Sound DSP: Finally, this tech makes Barefoot Sound’s ambitious software and designs possible. This DSP at the heart of every Barefoot speaker ensures near-zero latency, seamless audio processing, and true-to-life sonic detail and accuracy.

Never one to rest on their laurels, Barefoot Sound incorporates several new design elements into the Footprint03.

Take the new front-facing woofer. Instead of using dual-force technology like previous versions, Footprint03 uses a single 6.5″ aluminum cone woofer driven by a robust 100 W amplifier. While the previous designs worked well, the new woofer system benefits from a more potent magnet, a more powerful motor system, and an improved heat-sink system, all of which offer the same noise-free low end of previous models as well as less compressed output and greater reliability during extended use.

The midrange cone and tweeter also benefit from the same magnet and motor upgrades, as well as extra copper shorting rings for greater output and clarity even over extended use. Finally, the Footprint Gray polyester coating and Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF) provide the cabinet with better damping, greater stability, and reduced self-noise.

On the software side, the Footprint03 marks the debut of SPOC, also known as Spectrally Optimized Conversion. This new tech developed by Barefoot Sound, incorporates an analog crossover section prior to the analog-to-digital conversion, allowing the high frequencies to pass into the converter unattenuated. The result is higher audio resolution and a more transparent signal not found in any other monitor in its class. Plus, SPOC is a natural companion to Barefoot's existing DSP and MEME technology, a harmonious relationship that results in you having a more versatile and dynamic sound.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between New, Demo, and Used?‬

New products are brand new and factory‑sealed from the manufacturer. Most new items that Vintage King carries are subject to our FREE extended warranty protection.

Demo deal items are typically customer returns or factory-refurbished. Prior to shipment, each unit is carefully tested by our expert tech staff to ensure that functionality is 100% to spec.

Used items were formerly owned by someone else, and either sold to us or traded in toward the purchase of other equipment. Although no longer under the manufacturer's warranty period, almost all used items are serviced by our in-house technical staff, and come with a Vintage King warranty: 1 year for analog rack gear, 6 months for microphones, and 30 days for most digital products.
