513 Analog Recording Inc. is a locally owned and operated recording studio in Tempe, Arizona. Under the direction of owner Catherine Vericolli, the studio maintains an analog focus with the modern technologies (and convenience) of digital mixing and editing. In addition to the impressive list of outboard gear that 513 Analog acquired, Catherine specifically connected with Schneider for Pro Tools HD Native, which Vericolli and the rest of the 513 team are currently acquainting themselves with. Back in 2003, Mike Bridavsky started Russian Recording as a fairly small-scale operation housed in an A-frame style cabin in the woods of Brown County, Indiana. Five down the line, however, he decided that although the acoustics of the unique building were “very cool and gave a great overall sound”, he needed a bigger space that was closer to downtown Bloomington. Having owned the API 8200, 7800, 205’s, 550a’s and 560’s, the API 1608 recording console instantly grabbed Nieman’s attention during his search for a new console. When the time came to outfit the new room at his production company Nieman Music, Ian contacted Vintage King’s Mike Nehra to inquire about the 1608. In the 1970s and 80s, Boston’s legendary Dimension Sound Studio was one of Beantown’s busiest and best-loved recording rooms. The studio had some interesting and unique features, like an elevated control-room that looks down on the tracking area, and get-this; lead-lined walls! Upon its iconic black and white checkerboard floor stood some of the region’s greatest rockers; none more well-known than George Thorogood himself. The howlin’ blues guitarist cut his two biggest LP’s at Dimension, putting his music and the studio on the map. Gold records were hung, and good times were had. Continue reading →

New York-based mix Engineer Michael Brauer has worked with the who's who of classic rock. While working on records for Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones may be among his career highlights, Brauer isn't stuck in the golden age of rock 'n' roll. Continuing to work on significant projects in the 2000s, the transition to more modern pop seems to have been a simple one for Brauer. From Pitchfork lauded artists like Twin Shadow to jam rock giants My Morning Jacket, the Grammy award winning mix engineer has put his sonic stamp on music scene of the new decade. Producer/Mixer Tim Palmer, is one of alternative rock's most unsung heroes. In the early 1980s, Palmer worked as an assistant engineer at Utopia Studios in London, England, helping musicians like Mark Knopfler and Dead or Alive. Throughout the latter half of the 1980s, Palmer became a producer, and his keen ears and technical knowledge contributed to edgy post-punk groups such as the Mighty Lemon Drops, the Mission and Gene Loves Jezebel. In 1989, Palmer produced David Bowie's debut LP with Tim Machine. Much of Bowie's output in the 1980s was chastised for its slick pop, but Palmer emphasized Tin Machine's scrappy guitars and thunderous drums, laying the foundation for Bowie's artistic comeback in the 1990s.
