Telefunken Elektroakustik plays an incredibly important role in the history of condenser microphones, as they've helped create some of the most recognizable designs in our industry. While the brand still makes highly accurate replicas of icons like the U 47 and ELA M 251E, they have also created the outstanding Alchemy Series. When designing the Alchemy Series, Telefunken set out to create fresh takes on the classic German condenser and use modern tech to make a more affordable microphone. Since Mesanovic entered the pro audio scene, founder and designer Deni Mesanovic has shown a deep commitment to every detail of his gear. Not only has he designed many of the components used in his ribbon microphones and monitors, but he’s also building them in-house at the brand’s Detroit-based facility. That same commitment to in-house design and manufacturing is at the heart of Mesanovic’s new 500 Series modules. The M97 500 Series Preamp and MQ712 500 Series EQ both feature in-house wound input and output transformers and a discrete op-amp. Earlier this week, Vintage King listed two sets of vintage preamp/EQs that share a connection to the Trident A-Range design lineage. The A-Range preamp/EQs numbered #VK01452/#VK01453 were repainted gray from their original eggplant finish upon arriving in America in the mid-1970s. The other modules were built here to match, painted silver, and feature some subtle EQ differences. But what made the A-Range console so special in the first place? The Neumann U 67 is one of the most famous microphones in recording history, and for good reason. This large-diaphragm condenser is a true studio workhorse, equally at home on any source you put in front of it. You hear people say that about a lot of mics, but with the U 67, it isn’t hyperbole. It’s an absolute fact. Back in 2018, the brand introduced a painstakingly accurate Neumann U 67 Reissue, faithfully recreating the version of the mic that was produced from 1960 to 1971. The reissue features the same iconic components as the original, including the BV 12 output transformer, EF86 tube, and K 67 capsule.
