When a vintage Neve 33609 compressor arrives at the Vintage King Tech Shop, it's always cause for excitement. Especially the original “Metal Knob” 33609 units, which are becoming increasingly rare finds.
This particular unit represents the first iteration of what would become one of the most revered stereo compressors ever made, featuring a completely discrete signal path and custom transformers that helped establish the signature Neve sound.
The 33609 is a rackmount adaptation of Neve's acclaimed console modules—the Class A/B 2264, 32264, and 33314 broadcast version. These modules themselves descended from the fully Class A 2254, carrying forward the brand’s innovative diode-bridge topology for achieving gain reduction.
Like many of Neve’s designs, the 33609 features a completely discrete signal path and the brand’s iconic Marinair transformers. These aren't just any transformers—they're specifically chosen for their ability to impart that characteristic Neve color throughout the entire signal chain, from input to output.
The unit features a unique dual-section design that has become a hallmark of Neve compressors. From left to right, you'll find the limiter controls followed by the compression controls. This arrangement might seem counterintuitive at first, given that the signal actually flows through the compressor section before hitting the limiter. However, this distinctive layout has become part of the 33609's charm, offering engineers a workflow that has shaped countless classic recordings.
Like many of the iconic compressor designs from the 1960s, the 33609 uses a feedback-style compression circuit, which was new at the time. Put simply, the unit feeds control signals back through the diode-bridge gain reduction circuit, creating subtle analog harmonics and non-linearities. It's not just about gain reduction, but how the 33609 achieves it.
Perhaps most notably, the “Metal Knob” version features the original discrete BA440-style amplifiers, which many engineers prefer over the later BA640 IC-based cards found in subsequent revisions. Combined with the Marinair transformers, these amplifiers contribute significantly to the unit's highly sought-after sound character.
After a thorough restoration and careful calibration, this classic compressor is ready to return to service, carrying forward the legacy of Neve's engineering excellence for another generation of engineers and producers.
