Solid State Logic has done tremendous work to downsize some of the brand's classic designs for the 500 Series format. The storied pro audio company is at again with the new SSL B-Series Dynamics Module. This compressor/limiter and expander/gate offers some aggressive character based on a very particular circuit.

OK, let's set the scene. It's the 1980s. SSL 4000s are all the rage and some of the biggest cuts of the decade are being recorded with the console. Think Bryan Adams, Rush, Peter Gabriel, the list goes on and on. Everyone is in love with the SSL 4000's channel strip and its dynamics are killing it.

That same circuit people were vibing on several decades ago will now be available as the B-Series Dynamic Module. The compressor/limiter features three selectable stepped compression ratios with 2:1, 4:1, 10:1, and "DS" mode. This final setting is a 10:1 compression ratio that features an additional sidechain filter.

The B-Series Dynamic Module's gate/expander design offers engineers the option of a 20:1 or a 2:1 expander. Utilize the OUT setting on this section of the module, and you can take the gate/expander out of the circuit and just use the compressor/limiter.
