Earlier this year, news dropped that Universal Audio is introducing its first line of microphones, starting with the SD-1 Standard Dynamic mic. Starting today, you can order the next mic in the series—or should we say mics? Introducing the SP-1 Standard Pencil Microphones ($399), a pair of small-diaphragm condenser microphones that make it easy to capture studio-quality stereo recordings.

Here are the highlights:

  • Sold in matched stereo pairs, SP-1 condenser mics are perfect for capturing natural-sounding drum recordings.
  • The included stereo bar makes it easy to capture spacious guitar recordings.
  • Standard Series mics integrate seamlessly with Apollo series audio interfaces.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE UA SP-1 STANDARD PENCIL MICROPHONES

Matched Stereo Pairs

The first thing you’re likely to notice about the new SP-1 Standard Pencil Microphones is that they’re sold in pairs, which makes them perfect for capturing stereo recordings. Each pair is matched at the factory to ensure the sonic imprint of both mics is nearly identical, enhancing the clarity and depth of stereo recordings. Set them up on separate mic stands for a spaced pair technique or use the included stereo bar for tight X/Y recordings. Both approaches work great on drums, acoustic guitars and more.

Tech Specs

The new SP-1 mics don’t just sound good, they’ve got the tech specs to back them up. With a fixed cardioid pickup pattern, these versatile small condenser microphones can be used to capture tight mono sources with minimal noise bleed, or spacious stereo recordings.

SP-1 mics feature a balanced frequency response from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with a smooth, clear top-end that’s perfect for bringing out the details in acoustic instruments. And with a max SPL of 142 Db, you can capture loud guitar amps and heavy-hitting drummers without worrying about clipping your recording or damaging the mics.

Retro-Future Design

Great sound is at the center of everything Universal Audio does. But in an age where most sessions also act as social media photoshoots, it’s important to have a mic that looks good on camera. With a retro finish inspired by the classic condensers of yesteryear, SP-1 mics look just as good as they sound.

But don’t let their sleek design fool you—these mics were built to withstand daily use in the studio and even on the road. They may look vintage, but these workhorse condensers are durable enough to meet the needs of even the most demanding pro engineers.

Seamless Integration With Apollo Interfaces

Equipped with a standard XLR connector, SP-1 mics work with any modern preamp or recording interface, but recording with a Universal Audio Apollo interface unlocks powerful Apollo SP-1 presets. Professionally tuned for pro-studio sound, Apollo SP-1 presets take the guesswork out of setting up with custom EQ settings for a variety of common instruments.

Accessories

Every pair of SP-1 microphones includes the following professional accessories:

  • Two mic stand mounts
  • Stereo T-bar
  • Two foam windscreens
  • Two ⅝” to ⅜” thread adapters
