I love it.

great sales service and follow up at VK! It looks different from the previous model I purchased 3 years ago, but they sound punchy and clear.

I tested all the 1073 style pres available this one was the clear winner for my purposes. Far better than the current Neve 1073. It brings clarity warmth and punch to analog synthesizers, making them sound much better (in that subtle nuanced way you want, not like an effect, just better, stronger, more professional, etc.) and does the same for my vocals (WA-47 mic). Ultimately I wanted two, and I mildly regret not just getting the dual channel with EQ on the first go.
Regarding synths, this elevates the sound of cheaper synths like the sh01a to a more pro output sound, and also shapes and improves more expensive synths like the prophet 08, korg poly six, moog sub37, Roland jx3p, and many more. In short it’s pretty much a wonder tool I couldn’t do without.
I have it paired with the antelope pure2 interface.
If I had to describe its sound I’d say it tightens the bass low end, emphasizing the audible bass a bit, adds definition to the mids ,and softens harsh highs a smidge (does more of that the more you push the input ). It’s a good pre for people who like warm classic sounds, while maintaining and enhancing all original detail.
In short I love it, and think everyone should have one.

If your looking for that classic big fat warm fuzzy sound, this is it! Sounds great on anything you put it on, especially things like drums and vocals. Use a pair of them on your whole mix master buss for some added saturation/harmonics can really help bring a digital mix to life. Impeccably built with high quality pots and push buttons, I wish I had a rack full of them!

Honestly this has been one of the pieces of gear that has detailed my sound in my home studio. So creamy and full of life. I’ve ran it through vocals, guitars, requintos, vihuela, and amps. Excellent!!

Love them. My new go to pres.

This pre is the perfect companion for my Manley reference C,IMHO, the combination of the two is the closest you're ever gonna get to the sound of that good old Sony 800G without shelling out 10 grand. Add a couple of dbs of 15k and voila.
A crucial link in the audio chain is the microphone preamplifier, aka the mic preamp or mic pre. The output level of a microphone is very low and requires amplification to bring it up to line level. That’s what a mic pre does. But a mic preamp can’t drive a pair of speakers; that’s the job of the main amplifier.A key part of the job for a mic pre is to keep input noise to a minimum and to amplify without distortion.
Being the first amplification stage of the microphone signal, the mic preamp is essential to getting a good sound. Choose a poor one and you’ll be working harder to overcome its limitations. Choose a good one and processing your sound will get a lot easier. But what are the differences between average preamps and better ones? Let’s look at some of them. Continue reading →
One of the reasons working in the recording studio is so great is the sense of spontaneity that can often be associated with it. Whether it's going into the booth with nothing written down or pairing with a collaborator you've never worked with before, these moments often lead to some of our best musical output.
For the past ten years, adidas has aimed to inspire artists by putting them in these types of creative situations. It started with their Song From Scratch video series, which asked artists to complete a song on the fly and in a single sitting. More recently, the brand expanded on the concept with Creator Camp. The 500 Series format consists of a whole slew of different signal processing modules in a compact rack unit. Mic preamps, equalizers, compressors, DI boxes, filters, effects... You name it, you can find it in a 500 Series version from a wide variety of manufacturers. Most of those manufacturers participate in the VPR Alliance, established to set standards for the format to ensure that the end user can rely on consistent specifications with regard to voltage, current draw, size, etc. along with proper compatibility with existing modules. The essence of this idea is to make it simple for the user to mix and match modules from different makers, thus allowing for the broadest range of implementation for their products. The roots of BAE Audio were planted back in the 1980s with the original Brent Averill Enterprises. It began with a focus on repairing and racking original Neve and API modules to bring the sound of a full mixing board into rack-mounted gear that could fit into any studio workflow. As the business evolved, Brent began replicating the original designs to the nth degree, using original spec components from OEM manufacturers (particularly the transformers) and wiring these all-discrete designs by hand. A reputation for build quality and sonic excellence was established that continues to this day.
In the late ‘90s, Brent decided to retire. Enter Mark Loughman, a tech at the firm who decided to buy the business and continue the excellence. He renamed it BAE, a nod to both the original name and an acronym for British Audio Engineering, which was and still is the focus of the sonic signature created by BAE products. The classic “British EQ” and the sound heard on countless records emanating from the UK for the past five decades is at the heart of BAE. Continue reading →
