In the last 20 or so years, the pro audio market has shifted dramatically with the introduction of Digital Audio Workstations and computer-based recording setups. Of all the companies pioneering this wave, Avid has become the most prominent. The purveyor of Pro Tools, Avid’s software has become the undisputed industry standard for recording and mixing. With their award-winning plug-ins, control surfaces, and interfaces, Avid is one of the cornerstones of modern recording for good reason.

When Pro Tools hit the market some 30 years ago, it immediately made waves as engineers everywhere were given the option to make records without using tape. In the following years, Pro Tools rigs would go from luxury setups to become the industry standard, effectively replacing the need for tape machines.
Avid, who acquired Pro Tools in the 1990s, has become virtually the leading name in recording software. Walk into any major studio and you’ll find a Pro Tools system, likely paired with one of their high-end audio interfaces. Avid’s technology is so well-established that many music colleges offer specific courses on Avid certifications.
Avid offers up much more than Pro Tools rigs, though. Recently, the S Series of control surfaces (S1, S3, S4, and S6) has drawn attention from mix engineers and broadcast production companies alike. Offering console-shaped systems that are totally digitally integrated has made for excellent workflow with Pro Tools-based systems. Mixing with as few or many faders as you need, as well as inserts and routing options, products like the S6 stand tall in the world of high-end studios. Add to that the fact that Avid’s interfaces offer fantastic A/D and D/A conversion, and it’s no wonder why the purple Avid logo is found in almost every control room.
Also well known for their expansive live sound consoles, Avid brings the Venue line of products for Front of House (FOH) live sound engineers demanding the highest quality mixes with real-time plugins to help shape the sound of a performance. Many leading artists can be found touring with an Avid Venue system, which also makes it easy to record and capture live performances in Pro Tools for referencing later. Excellent workflow and design work establishes the live sound line from Avid as a contender amongst live mixing stars like DigiCo and Midas. Ask FOH engineers what it’s like to use the Venue or older SC48 systems, and a smile immediately comes to their faces.
Today, Avid’s diversity of products and knack for technical excellence keeps them one of the preeminent names in pro audio. Pro Tools won’t be going anywhere, and neither will the excellent mixing desks that Avid makes. Whether it’s their interfaces like the MTRX or their state-of-the-art S6 console-style control surface, Avid equipment is universally revered and continues to lead the way of digital recording.
