The Avid SoundReplacer, is one of the new school: simple in interface and powerful in possibilities. It does exactly what the name implies, replacing particular sounds in a single audio selection with user-selected samples. To make things a bit more interesting, it has three separate threshold levels, each corresponding to a different sample, and various cross-fade, peak alignment, dynamics, and mixing functions.
SoundReplacer runs under the file-based AudioSuite plug-in environment in Pro Tools and compatible software, rather than the real-time, DSP munching, TDM environment. To get started, just make an audio selection and choose the plug-in from the AudioSuite menu, as usual. Making a subsequent selection doesn't cause a problem for the waveform display in the plug-in window, as an update button and a latching auto-update button instigate the work of 're-learning' and re-drawing the waveform.
The waveform display inside the plug-in window has its own scroll bars and zoom controls. The three colored flags to the left of the waveform display are the threshold controls for each sample. Assigning samples to these thresholds is as simple as clicking on the disk icons at the base of each slider and navigating an 'open file' dialogue to find each one.
