The Avid Pro Tools Dock is based on the advanced touchscreen workflows on the Master Touch Module of the award-winning Pro Tools | S6. Both systems demonstrate the philosophy that mixers need the best of physical faders, knobs, and switches in conjunction with touchscreen technology for things like fast navigation, metering, and on-screen plug-in control – a true hybrid approach. And, when the Dock is paired with Pro Tools | S3, you gain complimentary and enhanced functionality with the dedicated automation switches, transport controls, weighted aluminum jog wheel, color-coded Soft Key switches, and more. Mixing deadlines have met their match! The Dock’s eight soft knobs can be used to control parameters like EQ, Dynamics, Panning, and Sends on the Attentioned (focused) channel – a la the S6 Master Touch Module. ‘Attentioning’ a track is as easy as touching the track tile on the screen and it brings it to the fader. This new ‘super’ Channel view on Pro Tools | Control is unlocked while using the Dock or S3. The two rows of LED color-coded buttons on the Dock right below the screen change colors and map to the Soft Keys in the smaller view on your iPad – lining up directly underneath the matching soft button onscreen. The Dock works standalone with an iPad (sold separately) and also pairs with the S3 as mentioned above to offer a powerful, integrated, ergonomic, editing and mixing system for under $6,200 retail.
This thing is fantastic. It wasn't until I bought the Avid S1 that I realized how useable and flexible EUCON can be for us non Pro Tools users. As long as your DAW supports EUCON you can set the mountains of buttons and controls on the Dock to do whatever you'd like. Doing so in Digital Performer has sped up and smoothed out my workflow as a game music composer considerably! Everythng from easy commands to full-on mega macros can be assigned to the keys. And the soft keys with corresponding graphics on the tablet are among my favorites -- literally anything you'd like to set up to make your work easier can be set to these keys and it looks super cool to boot.
My only complaint is that the iPad doesn’t just plug into the Dock. Well it does but only for power, it takes another cable to connect it to a network. Using the Control app over wifi is latent and prone to dropouts, while plugging it into a network makes it fast and bulletproof. It takes me 4 adaptors and 3 cables to hook both the Dock and Control app up to my MacBook Pro. Other than that I love it!
Whoa! I love my Dock. I use it in ways I didn't think I would. I've now mixed a chunk of songs without even touching the mouse!
