In the last 20 or so years, the pro audio market has shifted dramatically with the introduction of Digital Audio Workstations and computer-based recording setups. Of all the companies pioneering this wave, Avid has become the most prominent. The purveyor of Pro Tools, Avid’s software has become the undisputed industry standard for recording and mixing. When Pro Tools hit the market some 30 years ago, it immediately made waves as engineers everywhere were given the option to make records without using tape. Avid, who acquired Pro Tools in the 1990s, has become virtually the leading name in recording software. Also well known for their expansive live sound consoles, Avid brings the Venue line of products for Front of House (FOH) live sound engineers demanding the highest quality mixes with real-time plugins to help shape the sound of a performance. Many leading artists can be found touring with an Avid Venue system, which also makes it easy to record and capture live performances in Pro Tools for referencing later. Excellent workflow and design work establishes the live sound line from Avid as a contender amongst live mixing stars like DigiCo and Midas. Ask FOH engineers what it’s like to use the Venue or older SC48 systems, and a smile immediately comes to their faces.
Today, Avid’s diversity of products and knack for technical excellence keeps them one of the preeminent names in pro audio. Pro Tools won’t be going anywhere, and neither will the excellent mixing desks that Avid makes. Whether it’s their interfaces like the MTRX or their state-of-the-art S6 console-style control surface, Avid equipment is universally revered and continues to lead the way of digital recording.
