Growing up in the Bay Area, Jason Boulé grew up on classics like Van Halen and AC/DC before picking up a guitar himself at the early age of 10. Jason found his passion for recording during the late 2000s, fascinated with the era's wave of pop music and its clean yet purposeful sound. With broad musical tastes that span from Queens of the Stone Age to Miike Snow, Jason finds influence in artists that deliver great grooves and riffs. When it comes to the recording process, Boulé's inspiration comes from the moments working with artists where a melody or topic spurs the artist into creating some of their most exciting work yet. During his spare time, when he's not immersed in the world of audio, Jason finds himself spending time with his dog, going to the gym, and traveling.
When working with artists, Jason's approach focuses on connecting and understanding the artist on a deep level, allowing both parties to work symbiotically to find the song's intent. No stranger to the soldering iron, his ability to create or modify gear to achieve new sounds is what truly opens up the world of sonic possibilities for Boulé. Enjoying the process of finding creative solutions for audio workflow, Jason finds himself right at home amongst the team at Vintage King.
What piece of gear do you feel changed how people work the most?
Computers would be the most obvious answer. The ability to edit and flip things, chop and resample opens up a whole new world of sonic textures and becomes an instrument in its own right.
What record do you point to as an example of perfect music production? Why?
Daniel Johns' Talk album is one of my favorite bodies of work. Such interesting and creative arrangements and writing front to back.
