From the crushing sounds of Boss HM2 driven 80’s and 90’s metal, to the experimental lushness of reverb washed shoegaze bands, Jack has made it his mission to understand the inspiration behind their inspiration. Unraveling the many layers of what makes the timeless records so meaningful has been Jack’s prerogative in music from the very beginning.
Whether it’s a guitar choice, a reverb setting, or who happened to be in the control room that day, he’s on the job to highlight the importance of the details in everything audio. Jack’s deep admiration for everything sound has led him all over the landscape of audio. Starting as a bedroom producer, hunched over a hand-me-down laptop and Scarlett 2i2, his fascinations couldn’t be stopped.
Constantly researching, studying, and talking to all who would hear him out, there was no stopping him from trying his best to learn it all. If he found something he loved, like hearing Hum’s You’d Prefer An Astronaut, or Depeche Mode’s Violator for the first time, he is like a dog with a bone. Once sinking his teeth into a record he loves, he’s going to find out every detail of what created that record, and happily go on for hours about the importance of every seemingly small part.
That same drive is what Jack brings to the table in his role at Vintage King. Making it his job to explore the intricacies of your needs, and guide you to solutions is what he loves the most. He’s willing to go the extra mile to assure the importance of your needs down to the smallest details never go unnoticed.
What is your favorite piece of gear?
The Shure SM58, a timeless classic. Affordable, dependable, and great quality. The importance of the SM58 highlights the most crucial part of recording, the performance. A vocalist's experience and ability can be quickly realized with how great they can make it sound.
What piece of gear changed how people work the most?
That would be the modern DAW. Whatever your DAW of choice may be, the ease of workflow and accessibility made home recording possible for many of those who would have never gotten that opportunity. To think every Iphone has GarageBand pre downloaded says so much about how times have changed for the better.
What record do you point to as an example of perfect music production? Why?
Nine Inch Nails’ Pretty Hate Machine. A revolutionary release - it’s perfect in my humble opinion. The use of sounds, structure, and feel amalgamate to a timeless classic. Self production to a genius level. To think Trent’s music would flourish to the degree it has is a reality every musician wishes to have. This record shows Trent’s potential and his importance at an insane level.
