Ben Robinson brings nearly 15 years of experience in audio gear sales to the Vintage King team, along with a passion for helping customers navigate complex systems and find creative solutions for their studio needs. Originally from Chicago, Ben’s journey into music started early thanks to his mother, who taught piano and enrolled him in lessons at age 10. A few years later, he was playing percussion and marching drumline, and eventually exploring recording and electronic music during and after high school.
While studying audio, Ben began working in studios and quickly found himself drawn to the gear side of the business. He spent nearly a decade and a half in gear sales, where he honed his technical knowledge and developed a reputation for his problem-solving approach and client-first mentality. Now at Vintage King, he’s excited to return to a role that requires deeper expertise and a focus on high-end systems. “I like digging into the details,” Ben says. “Solving challenges for people who care about their craft is what I love most.”
Ben’s recording journey started on Cool Edit Pro back in middle school (“It was awful,” he admits), but that early taste of production set the tone for a lifelong obsession with sound. These days, he splits his time between traditional rock sessions in Pro Tools and more experimental electronic work in Logic and Ableton. His favorite part of the process? Tone shaping and sound design, especially when he gets to incorporate new or unusual gear. “I like to break my own habits,” he says. “It keeps the process exciting.”
Among his all-time favorite tools is the SSL 4000 console. “It has everything you need to track or mix a great record,” he says. He also points to the rise of high-end interfaces like the Universal Audio Apollo line as a modern game changer: “They’ve made professional sound accessible to everyone.”
Outside the studio, Ben is an avid biker, hiker, and kayaker. He loves traveling, video games, anime, and spending time with his dog.
Who are some of your favorite artists and why? I love artists who tend to bend in and out of their genre, possibly with a visual element to it. Some of these artists are Bon Iver, Sigur Rós, Fred Again.., Kendrick Lamar, Logic, and many others.
What record do you point to as an example of perfect music production and why? My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West. Not only is it mixed well and has some of my favorite production engineers on the album, but it also has character. That’s something that seems to be lost in a lot of productions.
What is the most important piece of recording or production advice you've ever received? The most practical by far is, “Don’t mix with your eyes.” I’ve never had it fail me.
What's something interesting that we might not know about you? I still can't snap my fingers. I'm double-jointed. I'm very interested in Japanese culture.
