A Deeper Look At ATC's History

ATC began building custom units in 1974, mainly a range of 12” drivers for the PA industry. ATC introduced the 12″ PA75-314 driver, a design capable of handling more power and producing less distortion at a higher sound pressure level than any other unit on the market. As bands like Supertramp began to use these drivers in live rigs, ATC began to gain recognition. Roughly a year later, ATC launched a 3-inch soft dome midrange with better dispersion, wider bandwidth, and lower distortion. The driver, known as the SM 75-150, became a mainstay in the product line, boasting a wide frequency range, high power handling, and neutral sound characteristics. Today, the SM 75-150 is installed in several 3-way models from the SCM-40 up to the SCM-300.
ATC founder Billy Woodman emphasized the importance of using quality midrange drivers when the company started. For ATC, the performance of its loudspeakers depends on an accurate midrange; performance is never compromised in this area. In the late ‘90s, Billy Woodman and his research team developed an innovative new driver topology designed to eliminate the effects of magnetic hysteresis as a significant source of distortion in loudspeaker drive units. For better efficiency, the back plate, pole, magnet, and front plate are magnetized as a singular unit, as opposed to magnetizing each individual component. All ATC drivers are made using fine materials such as pure copper wire with high-temperature enamel for unquestionable reliability at extreme power levels. -
The dual suspension tweeters used in ATC loudspeakers are made from the same materials and engineering methods used to make the soft dome midrange drivers. This practice ensures consistency across the entire range of loudspeakers. Each 25mm tweeter is mounted and loaded into a high-powered neodymium magnet assembly. The tweeter’s low harmonic distortion and extended top end capabilities are a result of engineering methods that contribute to the goal of attaining neutral fidelity and high dynamic range. ATC took it a step further and designed an ‘S’ version of their original SH25-76 with a superior motor for vanishing harmonic distortion levels. By putting every tweeter through rigorous testing and QC measures, ATC is able to stand confidently behind the quality espoused in their philosophy.

The ATC SCM300ASL active 3-way studio reference monitors stand tall at the top of the ATC collection of far-field models. These large format main monitors are equipped with 1.25” soft dome tweeters, twin full spec Super Linear 15” bass drivers, and a 3” Super Dome midrange driver. They’re the necessary choice for commercial recording studios and post-production houses. For something smaller, consider the SCM110ASL with its 9” Super Linear bass drivers. It’s installed with the same dual-suspension S-Spec tweeter and soft dome midrange driver as its older brother. Due to its compact size, the SCM110ASL is perfect for mid-sized facilities. ATC mid-field and near-field monitors are equally prolific. The SCM150ASL is based on the SCM300ASL, sporting the same tweeter and drivers. This model is fitted with a 350W Tri-Amp Pack amplifier to deliver phenomenal output, as well as an LF control with five different bass settings to tune the low end to an appropriate level for any environment. Like the far-field lineup, ATC has a more compact monitoring option for mid-sized studios: the SCM100ASL. There is also a long range of active near-field studio monitors for smaller rooms, including the SCM25A, SCM20ASL and the SCM12. These 2-way systems deliver clear, neutral sound without any noticeable levels of distortion while listening critically to source audio material.

To access an extended low-end, consider one of the subwoofers. The SCM0.1/15SL is a powerful 15” active sub driven by a 450W Class G amplifier featuring intuitive gain and variable cutoff frequency controls to sculpt deep low-end.
