A Deeper Look At Apogee's History

Apogee was there from the beginning. The origins of digital audio were met with certain problems, particularly distortion artifacts. Apogee was one of the first innovators that pursued the advancement of digital audio while chasing a sound that was reminiscent of analog warmth. The company founders succeeded in finding a solution to this problem by designing the first anti-aliasing filters. The 924 and 944 anti-aliasing filters were used in high-end Sony and Mitsubishi digital recording systems to make the CD format sound warmer and more like analog. This same technology became the fuel for other industry firsts, like the AD-500 and DA-1000. These landmark A/D D/A converters revealed what digital systems truly have to offer.

During the late ‘90s, Apogee introduced the AD-8000 along with the AmBus HD card for Pro Tools integration. These developments sparked the shift towards more efficient workflow for computer-based recording, particularly during a time when developers were still pushing the limits of digital audio. The AD-8000 was the first multi-channel 24-bit audio interface. It pushed the envelope of digital audio quality, establishing Apogee as a key innovator in the field of professional audio. What followed was a range of high-resolution converter/preamps, digital master clocks, and class compliant FireWire interfaces. Today, Apogee audio interfaces are regarded as the reference standard in the audio industry.

  • The Symphony I/O Mk2 is Apogee’s flagship audio interface for studio or home recording. It’s a configurable multi-channel interface for Thunderbolt, Pro Tools HD, Dante, and SoundGrid systems. It comes in four different I/O configurations and can be expanded to process up to 32 channels of modular analog I/O at ultra-low levels of latency. The customizable Symphony Control Software, fluid touchscreen display, and front panel options allow full control over one of the best per-channel Thunderbolt audio interfaces on the market.

The Ensemble is a 30 x 34 I/O Thunderbolt 2 audio interface that combines legendary Apogee conversion with a Core Audio-optimized DMA engine for processing additional plugins and virtual instruments. Its 8 mic preamps make best use of Apogee’s Advanced Stepped Gain Architecture for low distortion, ultra-low noise, and superior bandwidth. The preamp circuits are dynamically optimized at different gain settings, whereas most audio interfaces are designed with chips that generally struggle to perform consistently at gain extremes. The Ensemble is also designed to connect to any Element series interface or an additional Ensemble interface for extended I/O. With other useful features, like talkback functionality, the Ensemble is one of Apogee’s strongest contenders.

  • The Element series consists of three rugged models (24, 46, 88) that offer high-quality converters and premium mic preamps to capture every subtle detail in a recording. These interfaces can be paired alongside Element Control for Mac or Element Control Mobile iOS to harness versatile workflow options. Additionally, the Element series supports the Direct Monitoring feature in Apple’s Logic Pro X (10.3.2) to easily eliminate latency. As stated previously, any model in the Element series can be paired with the Apogee Ensemble. This makes Element interfaces an excellent stepping stone for larger projects, allowing for a nice mix of ways to configure any Element series interface to fit the workflow that appeals to you most.

There’s never a compromise on quality, so you can feel confident in the incredible value of Apogee’s well-priced desktop interfaces like the Duet, Quartet, and ONE. The most sophisticated interface in this family is the Symphony Desktop, a 10×14 USB Type C audio interface with vintage mic preamp emulation and premium native plugins. The Symphony Desktop has a zero latency workflow similar to the Apogee Ensemble due to its DualPath technology. This means you can enjoy the flexibility of using Apogee’s plugins both natively in your DAW and on the hardware-based DSP installed in your Symphony Desktop. All Apogee desktop audio interfaces are perfect for small home studios or mobile recording.
