The API 512c is a mic / line / instrument preamp, world famous for its ability to provide a low noise (-129 EIN) and unusually good sounding front end for all types of audio applications. Sonically, it delivers the distinct API sound in the scalable API 500 Series format. Offering an impressive 65 dB of gain, the 512c includes phantom power, switchable polarity, -20 dB pad and Mic or Instrument/Line selector. Front panel XLR and 1/4 inch connectors combined with rear panel mic access allows for additional flexibility when installed into a 500 Series module rack. The API 512c remains faithful to the circuit designs of API's founder Saul Walker. Artfully combining those circuits with API's proprietary transformers and the incomparable 2520 op-amp, the 512c is a highly musical and rich-sounding analog mic pre, equally at home in commercial recording spaces as it is in smaller home studios. Fully featured and still hand assembled, the 512c exhibits the reliability, long life, and uniformity which are characteristic of all API products.
Find them to be very thick and tight in the low mids. Using them primarily as dedicated guitar/bass inputs.

One of the best Pres in our studio, a classic!!! Excellent on everything from Vocals to Drums and the DI is killer on Keys and Bass!!!
I had a pair of 512s for years and loved them. I traded them in for Neve 1073 LBs, and it was lie falling into a black hole. The APIs are magic, pure and simple. They make any mic sound pristine, and uncolored, and you can get by without EQing their that good. So, I sold the Neve's and bought another pair of APIs. I'm writing this to save others the money, time and hassle of disappointment. If you go with Neve, you have to get older 1073s -- the large units with the EQ built in. That's big money, but for less than half the dough, you can't go wrong with the API's!
I've always heard how punchy classic api 512's are. Now that I own a 512c is doesn't disappoint. It's super punchy with forward mids, but still warm and musical - plus I was pleasantly surprised to receive it from VK in only two days from placing my order!
The API sound is something my ears have always been drawn to, so when I decided to start building a little studio setup of my own, I know it needed to start with API. Im a drummer by trade, and to me nothing beats the sound of an API. I loaded up my first lunchbox with 4 512cs to be used for my kick, snare and toms, the first recording I did in my home studio was just as good as anywhere Ive tracked in the past. I was going to add some other preamps to have the option for different tones, but was so impressed by the sound of API I ended up adding 4 more 512cs. My recordings have never been as clear and punchy, adding API to my home setup has completely revolutionized my sound!
