A Deeper Look At Antelope's History

  • antelope_bottom_1.jpg

Antelope Audio is led by Igor Levin, who began designing digital audio gear in 1990 under the brand Aardvark. His first product, an 18bit SPDIF card, led to a set of A/D and D/A converters that required a clock. Although his converters sold well, it was the clock that became very popular. At the time, master audio clocks weren’t standalone products. Realizing the relevance and need for a reliable clock on the market, Levin marketed the AardSync, which can still be found in a few mastering studios today. The AardSync was Levin’s entryway into building reliable master clocks and the brand’s current myriad of digital audio equipment that allows users to harness the power of digital audio without sacrificing the warmth of analog gear.

  • In 2005, Antelope Audio introduced the oven-controlled crystal oscillator to provide a more stable timebase for clocking systems. By providing an enclosure with a constant temperature, the crystal remains at a constant rate of vibration, improving stability and jitter performance. With this design at the forefront, Antelope Audio unveiled their first audio master clock to feature oven-controlled jitter technology, the Isochrone OCX. The OCX (oven-controlled oscillator), created a new standard in audio clocking technology fully able to lock to an atomic clock. The early Isochrone line of products set Antelope Audio on a path to unveil successive generations of reliable master clocks and other digital audio lines.

Today, Antelope Audio offers a powerful collection of audio interfaces, many of which utilize FPGA and DSP chips to handle the bulk of FX processing to lift the burden off the CPU. Low latency and low CPU draw is just part of the allure. The brand’s Synergy Core technology allows an impressive array of multiple FX instances at any sample rate. The Discrete 4 and Discrete 8 are smaller, yet surprisingly capable, examples. The Discrete 4 can handle up to 32 real-time FX instances, and the Discrete 8 can handle up to 64. For even more FX processing power, check out the Orion Studio Synergy Core capable of carrying up to 256 FX instances. These are great Thunderbolt/USB audio interfaces that can also take full advantage of Antelope Audio’s AFX2DAW software.

To get the most out of the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chips, take full advantage of the AFX2DAW software. The program builds a bridge between any DAW and the chips installed in Antelope Audio hardware. Within the VST plugin, which mimics realistic rack-based signal flow, users can easily apply FPGA FX to control hardware in tandem with other third-party plugins, DAW-based effects, and automation features. The seamless low-latency processing capabilities relieve the technical headaches of routing, while also lessening CPU load.

  • The company also specializes in designing unique modeling microphones. Engineers looking for microphones a step ahead should look into the Edge series. Each mic caters to a specific style or mic technique. For example, the Edge Solo is a large diaphragm condenser that recreates legendary cardioid-pattern single capsule microphones. Other microphones in this family have more sophisticated features. The Edge Quadro is a stereo mic with two dual membrane capsules, a rotating upper segment, four channels of processing, and selectable polar patterns for each mic segment. These modeling mics can be used alongside AFX2DAW to get the most out of the Synergy Core chips installed in the hardware.

Antelope Audio creates professional-grade experiences for mastering engineers and home studio enthusiasts who require high-def conversion of a stereo image. The Amari and Pure 2 are the two current mastering conversion products made by Antelope Audio. Both feature industry-leading analog circuitry and fourth-generation 64-bit AFCtechnology. Their transparent accuracy is perfect for audio archiving or situations when high-end AD/DA conversion is crucial to a project.

Last but not least, the crown line of Antelope Audio is their respected line of master clocks, all of which rely on highly accurate oven-controlled crystal oscillators. The Isochrone Trinity is an extremely accurate master clock that many in the industry believe is the best sounding high-definition audio clock available. Its ability to handle up to a 384 kHz sample rate comes with distinct sonic advantages that make it a must-have for studios in need of a good master clock. Other clocks, like their Isochrone OCX HD, continue the legacy of the original Isochrone OCX, raising the bar and providing even more accurate clocking at higher sample rates. Finally, the 10MX currently stands as the newest member of the isochrone family, boasting a fusion of atomic clock precision and superb jitter management.

Antelope Audio remains a dominant force in the world of clocking, audio interfaces, modeling microphones and more. Their wide range of powerful, cutting-edge hardware can complement any home setup or serve as an integral part of larger professional studios. This was my first experience buying something from Vintage King (although I surf the "used" categories on the website frequently!), and, despite being on the other side of the world, I had absolutely no trouble and everything went very smoothly.
