Picked this up for an artist of mine. They have a unique high-mid/low-treble harshness to their voice that almost sounds like distortion in some cases. I've used plenty of mics including the Tlm103, Tlm49, U87, and even the lower end C214 on their voice and I always get the same problem. The harshness stands out extremely well. I was hesitant because I was under the impression a 414 was just a 214 with more polar patterns. I was wrong. Smoothest vocal sound I've ever gotten, and honestly one of my favorite vocal sounds period. Its a very natural sounding mic with a bit of sheen. With the right preamp I feel it would fit almost any session.
I was using a rode NT-1 prior to this mic. I have a fairly deep male voice and this mic handles it great. Gives a little sizzle in the upper mids which helps my voice cut through a mix. Great all-arounder.
