The AEA R44CXE is the high output version of the R44CE combining the economical finish with the higher output of the R44CX. The cost-effective R44CXE features the exact same ribbon, transformer, and luscious sound as the R44CE, but with a simpler, economical exterior trim.

If your reading this review you most likely know how amazing old RCA ribbon mics are and AEA microphones are no exception... Wes Dooley (AEAs owner) has spent a lifetime in the pro audio scene worshipping and perfecting the art of microphone technology.. and has recreated the old RCA classic designs and improved them along with new designs that are equally amazing...
I personally spent the last 10 years trying every ribbon mic I could get my hands on and this model... the R44CXE
ended the quest.. I choose the passive design because it gives me much more tonal and headroom options over a active design. When recording passive, this mic makes a great room mic on drums, it is the perfect SPL match and when recording cello or voice and more critical I use it with a Cloudlifter-Z and can vary the impedance.. the more to the right you turn the knob, the louder and more present it gets... its really amazing how many tonal variations you can get... I'm also a lucky owner of 2 vintage RCAs and often the AEA is the top pick mainly due to having more presence and a lower noise floor..
The "X" in the CXE model has added modified magnets "x-motor" to give it an extra 6 db of output. and the "E" stands for Economy with a simpler mount and black paint Job.. without the fancy chrome striping, etc..
YES... this mic is almost as expensive as a old beat up 44BX (if you can find one) and then you most likely will need to have Wes or Enak audio re-ribbon it... That will be a exceptional microphone but still....this CXE is one of the best mics I own..
