A phantom powered version of the original U47 was released in 1969 known as the U47 FET. The circuit was quite desirable, using transistors creating a very robust sound. The FET mic has since obtained a legendary status being the most preferred mic in obtaining larger-than-life kick and bass tracks as well as thick and full vocals. The U47 FET is now becoming as sought after as the U47.

“The R&D for the CM7 FET relied on studying the original U47 closely,” says Wunder Audio’s Mike Castoro. “Employing the exact replica of the original grille is one of the key aspects of achieving the correct performance. We’ve been BETA testing this mic for a year now and are very happy with the progress and end result.”

    Review:

I saw and listened to this mic on VK's recent mic shootout featuring blues guitarist Kirk Fletcher. I was skeptical at first because Wunder isn't a huge brand name like Neumann, AKG, Telefunken, etc., but I liked what I heard on the shootout and the helpful people at VK sent me one (paid for, of course) to try, and told me to send it back if it's not a fit.

I tested it against my Neumann U87ai, and this mic blew it away on vocals. I'm a baritone vocalist and I need a mic that isn't too cloudy and dull sounding like most dynamics and some LDC's I have tried. This mic fits the bill. If I'm trying to stay high above the mix, I usually air it out with some high end on the tracking eq, but it doesn't need much. The low end is thick and round. I'm definitely reaching for the eq less with this mic, especially on vocals. Since it's a clone of the U47 FET, I'm not surprised that it sounds so good!
